Our Story
Believe it or not, I didn't have some driving passion to start a fashion brand, I just felt really uncomfortable in my own skin and had nothing to wear.
I’d had two baby boys 16 months apart and my body had changed. A lot. I was trying to find my way back to myself and started going to yoga, but every time I went, I wore the same black leggings and black top because that was pretty much all I felt comfortable in.
I’d leave yoga feeling exposed, like I didn’t deserve to be there looking the way I looked, which was a really destructive spiral for me.
At the time, Yolanda was helping me at home. I knew she was way too creative to be doing what she was doing and discovered she’d been sewing since she was 12 and had gone to fashion school.
So we made a kimono.
I threw it over those same black leggings and suddenly I felt different. My body hadn’t changed. I just felt really bloody good.
Women started complimenting me everywhere I went and asking "Yo! Where'd you get your kimono?" and that is how YoKimono was born.
The kimono became a top. Then pants. Then dresses. Yolanda and I started wrapping, tying, moving seams and finding clever ways to create pieces that could adjust with our bodies.
And that’s how our concept of adjustable fashion came to life.
You are allowed to feel good while you’re reaching your goals.
Our bodies change. We have babies, get older, gain weight, lose weight, bloat, get stronger and move through different seasons of ourselves. So why shouldn’t our clothes change with us?
Today Yolanda is our head seamstress, we have our own studio in Knysna, and that first kimono has grown into an entire collection built around one simple belief:
Women are ever changing and our clothes should honour that.
Sometimes it really is as simple as throwing on the damn kimono and getting on with enjoying your life.
I hope you feel delicious in your YoKi pieces and feel more and more like yourself everyday, because confidence ripples and that will change everything.
Love Dani xx
